First-pass metabolism is the process by which a nutrient or drug is broken down by the gut and liver before it reaches your general circulation. For some compounds — resveratrol and curcumin are classic examples — this breakdown is so extensive that only a small fraction of what you take ever becomes active in the body.
What happens
After a nutrient is absorbed from the intestine, it travels first to the liver before entering general circulation. The gut wall and liver contain enzymes that metabolize many compounds on this first pass — sometimes breaking down the majority of the dose before it ever reaches the rest of the body. This is why a nutrient can be technically "absorbed" and still deliver little active compound.
Why it matters for supplements
Compounds with heavy first-pass metabolism are exactly the ones where delivery technology earns its place:
- Resveratrol is extensively metabolized on first pass, which is why particle-size reduction and other delivery approaches are used to improve its plasma levels.
- Curcumin is rapidly metabolized and eliminated; piperine works partly by inhibiting the enzymes responsible.
